Our Mission

Big government is not simply the size of the budget, or the number of federal programs; it is the role the federal government plays in our daily lives.

We at the Lincoln Heritage Institute will not sit idly by and allow bloated bureaucracies, budensome tax policies, a failing public education system, and out of control regulatory system, and a growing disregard for the rule of law to become an accepted way of life

We have as our purpose, through public education, the revitalization and preservation of our traditional political, social, commercial, and legal environment in which the only limits to achievement are individual ability and effort.

Fatal Disintegration?
Not Yet

by Paul R. Hollrah; Contributor to Lincoln Heritage Institute

As the great east-west migration proceeded during the seventeenth, eighteenth, and nineteenth centuries, the leaders of that movement saw the North American continent as a geographically strategic “island,” protected economically and militarily by the Pacific Ocean on the west and the Atlantic on the east. They saw it as a place of unparalleled opportunity where European immigrants could establish a society in which free men, free of the heavy hand of monarchs and landed aristocracies, could grow and prosper.

That great experiment in self-government lasted 384 years, seven months, and ten days, from the signing of the Mayflower Compact on November 11, 1620, until June 21, 2005.

Abraham Lincoln once said that “a house divided against itself cannot stand.” He was referring to the differences that existed between the North and the South in the 1860’s, but his words were never truer than they are today. However, the divisions that exist today are far more intractable because they exist between people who are, politics aside, friends, neighbors, relatives, business associates, and co-workers. As Paul Craig Roberts suggests, “Our divisions are not merely political, or along economic or class lines. We are divided in new ways that reflect a fatal disintegration.”

Liberals divide women against men, blacks and Hispanics against whites, the poor against the rich, labor against management, and non-producers against producers. Class warfare is the name of their game.

Child advocates and anti-spanking radicals set children against parents and public schools against families.  Instead of celebrating a common heritage, our schools promote “ethnic diversity” and “multi-culturalism.”  Teachers teach ten- and twelve-year-old girls how to put condoms onto cucumbers but refuse to even mention the Ten Commandments.

Our system of justice has become a high-stakes lottery, run by lawyers for the benefit of lawyers. The only people with full access to justice are the very wealthy and the very poor. Most Americans fear lawyers more than they fear terrorists and suicide bombers.

The mainstream media have become so wedded to leftist ideology that, in their hands, fact becomes fiction and truth becomes irrelevant. News reports and editorials are so heavily slanted that they are indistinguishable from propaganda themes produced by liberal special interests.

Affirmative action policies are so incomprehensible that race and gender have become more important than knowledge, experience, and technical proficiency in hiring, college admissions, and government contracts.

And now, in the Supreme Court’s Kelo vs. New London decision of June 21, 2005, five liberal justices on the high court have decided that our homes can be taken from us by wealthy developers if they feel that they can put our property to a “higher and better use.”

But all is not lost. With as many as four Supreme Court vacancies to be filled during his second term, George W. Bush has an opportunity to create a “strict constructionist” majority on the court that will reshape the social and political life of our nation for generations to come. But it won’t be easy. Liberal Democrats demand even more liberalization, threatening dire consequences if the president nominates justices who might interpret the Constitution as it is written, not as they might wish it to be.

We Americans have always, with one major exception, settled our differences peaceably, but never in our nation’s history has one political party been led by men and women who appear indifferent to, and perhaps welcome, violent confrontation. Such is the caliber of those who lead the Democratic Party today. Watching Ted Kennedy, Chuck Schumer, Harry Reid, Dick Durbin, Robert Byrd, and Barbara Boxer before the TV cameras, it is clear that these are truly evil people. And given the level of hatred and the unquenchable thirst for power that motivates them, we should not be surprised at anything their partisans might do.

President Bush has nominated appellate court judge John Roberts to fill a vacancy on the Supreme Court. From everything we know about him, he appears to be a man of the very highest caliber, both personally and professionally, but in the weeks ahead we can expect Democrats to do everything in their power to destroy him. Will they be successful? We hope not. Will they be successful, once again, in demonstrating who and what they are for all the world to see? Yes, they will.

Their efforts to destroy John Roberts will be just one more skirmish in their campaign for a “fatal disintegration” of the American culture. What they hope to gain by destroying what has been the envy of all mankind remains a great mystery. We only know that they cannot be allowed to succeed.
