Corruption At EPA: At the Very Top?

EPA's Carol Browner, one-time Senate staff assistant to Al Gore, was appointed Administrator of EPA in 1993. It is not surprising to learn from various studies produced by the National Wilderness Institute that serious charges are now focused on Browner.Most incriminating of the many charges against Browner is "that the agency misuses science to promote its regulatory agenda." Nineteen scientists, employees of the EPA, in a letter to Congress charge "egregious misconduct" at EPA since Browner assumed her job.The letter to Congress stated, "...we find the situation so deplorable that we are choosing to risk our careers rather than keep silent ... We are but a few of the regional EPA scientists, technical staff and supervisors who are currently protesting fraud or waste in our agency involving hundreds of millions of dollars and sounding the alarm over enforcement actions based on poor science that stand to harm the public and the environment."Browner is no stranger to regulating based on poor 'junk' science as the Lincoln Log has pointed out in the past -- the Clean Air Act being just one of the examples that will do more harm to public health and national welfare than it will do good..The amazing frequency of screw-ups by the EPA reflects on leadership's agenda to promote social planning without full scientific appreciation or concern of howpeople's lives will be affected. As an activist environmentalist, Browner has proceeded on the principle that scientific support should not be required if there is perceived to be a problem. Dealing with the perceived problem and the hell with what science has to say -- that is real liberal and environmental lingo. Don't let the law, science, or people stand in your way. Unfortunately, that standard operating procedure of power whose grasp is more power over the lives and welfare of people.. Dr. Cohen's report documents the following patterns of behavior by EPA officials: 1) corrupting agency ethics rules to silence whistle blowers; 2) creating and submitting backdated documents to federal courts; 3) asking career scientists to lobby Congress: in violation of federal law; 4) overseeing the creation of a tax exempt group to circumvent state and local governments in violation of existing agreements; 5) abusing the rights of citizens by violating the Congressional Review Act and keeping crucial new regulations from public scrutiny by establishing unwritten and unpublicized regulations.
