The Voice of Freedom

Our Mission

Big government is not simply the size of the budget, or the number of federal programs; it is the role the federal government plays in our daily lives.

We at the Lincoln Heritage Institute will not sit idly by and allow bloated bureaucracies, budensome tax policies, a failing public education system, and out of control regulatory system, and a growing disregard for the rule of law to become an accepted way of life

We have as our purpose, through public education, the revitalization and preservation of our traditional political, social, commercial, and legal environment in which the only limits to achievement are individual ability and effort.

MUSINGS AFTER THE ELECTION

by Kim Weissman

Former Spanish Prime Minister Aznar wrote that the re-election of President Bush presented the free world with a second chance to defeat the forces of darkness, and observed that by their overwhelming vote for Bush, the American people have rejected the hate and affirmed a policy based on principles. Bush "decided to oppose brutality with steadfast conviction. Now a wide majority of his people has backed this policy."

Aznar concluded with pointed condemnation of the politics of hate: "Over the last few months we have witnessed numerous attempts to introduce and exploit issues that have the greatest capacity to create divisions. Power has been abused, and a damaging sense of polarization has set in. Hatred has been promoted in the place of understanding. Unity has been replaced with division. It is comforting to see that this strategy has simply mobilized many more millions of Americans, millions of Americans who went to the polls in order to do exactly the opposite. They have voted for a policy based on principles. They have voted for a sincere policy, for a leadership based on convictions."

Interesting to see that Spanish Prime Minister understands what American democrats still do not understand.

One consequence of the hatred spewed by the left in this election was succinctly described by commentator Tammy Bruce (self-described as an openly gay, pro-choice, gun owning, pro-death penalty, voted-for-President Reagan progressive feminist): Democrats lost votes in every one of their traditional demographic groups – women, blacks, Hispanics, Jews, union workers, seniors – except two. The two groups where Democrats gained votes? The first are high school dropouts. The second are people with post-graduate degrees, people who think they're better than everyone else and believe they have a natural entitlement to dictate how others should live their lives. The groups in which Democrats could hardly gain – because Democrats garner close to 100% of their votes already – are our cultural pop icons; and the inhabitants of Hollywood, who earn mega-millions pretending to be someone else, and repeating lines written by someone else, as others tell them how to dress, where to stand, and what emotions to mimic (and because they earn so much money doing so, they consider themselves brilliant and incisive thinkers).

Despite having been soundly defeated, the conspiracy kooks on the left – which encompasses all of liberalism these days, up to and including the formerly respectable national news media – are now suggesting that the election was stolen from them by rigged voting. Elections being contrived and run by imperfect human beings – perfection being reserved for the province of God – no one will claim that this election was perfect in all respects. None are. But the foreign monitors from the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE), whom leftists insisted monitor our election, have issued a preliminary report on the 2004 election.

Try as they might (the report drips with indications that they made a great effort to find fault), the criticisms of the observers were entirely inconsequential. For example: "Allegations of electoral fraud and voter suppression, primarily among minorities, were widely reported and presented to the EOM [Election Observation Mission] in the pre-election period." But the monitors did not report any actual instances of fraud or suppression on election day (in fact, "the electoral process was orderly and peaceful"); "…some voters, mostly but not exclusively the elderly, had difficulties with newer voting technologies", but help was available: "necessitating assistance by poll workers"; "…relatively few voters were challenged in the polling stations to confirm their eligibility to vote, despite indications that such challenges would be launched on a large scale". In short, "OSCE observers were granted access to polling stations in a number of states. … In those places where access was granted, OSCE observers noted that the key elements of HAVA [Help America Vote Act] were being implemented."

Most Americans took offense at the presence of these foreign monitors, but these are the referees demanded by American leftists themselves. The leftists got what they demanded, and now they have to live with it.

There is also talk in left-wing fever-swamps about secession, which is the equivalent of the spoiled brat on the playground threatening that unless he's made coach of the team, he's going to take his ball and go home: "Let us dictate your lives or we'll go and form our own country." One advantage of secession is that the "blue states" would take the United Nations in Manhattan and the self-absorbed pinheads in Hollywood with them. Blue state denizens would then be free to over-tax and over-regulate each other to their heart's content. The blue states would have no need of national defense, since the U.N. would be their protector; which works out quite nicely since the majority of the Americans who defend this country are from red states anyway. It would be fascinating to watch the blue states design their new Constitution, as left-wing extremists come out of the woodwork to demand enshrinement of their particular entitlements.

And imagine all the dead wood that has been engrafted onto the original Constitution – like the mystical "penumbras formed by emanations" from the Bill of Rights – that could be pruned away by the red states. All things considered, the red states might just invite the left to go right ahead with their plans. Alternately, many leftists who take full advantage of the liberty protected by the "ordinary" Americans they treat with such contempt, pledged to leave the country if Bush was re-elected. One Canadian reporter suggested that Canada should indict Bush for war crimes (after all, Kofi Annan declared the Iraq war to be illegal – what more does anyone need?) so our left-wing haters should feel right at home. According to Canada, on an average day 20,000 people in the U.S. log onto Canada's immigration website. That figure soared to 115,016 on November 3. To all those spoiled leftists, our well wishes – and don't let the door hit you on the way out. After all, if you're injured as you leave, you may have to access Canadian healthcare.

The party that proclaims tolerance is now home to the most intolerant bigotry abroad in the land today; the party of diversity now directs the vilest epithets, including outright racism, against those who deviate from the blinders of their lockstep ideology; the party that claims to disdain stereotypes now revels in the most insulting stereotypes they can devise. For a generation, leftists and Democrats have managed to fool the public into believing they are the sole repositories of compassion, tolerance, and diversity; but now, like the revealed portrait of Dorian Gray, the public is finally getting a good look at their true character.

They are ripping off their own masks of hypocrisy and revealing who they really are. Leftists point to the gay marriage ban proposals in an attempt to prove that their enemies, not they, are the real bigots, but the facts refute that spurious claim. The proposal was on the ballot in 11 states; it passed in all, by an average of 70%. In those 11 states, Bush averaged 58% of the vote, so 12% of those who voted for the bans also voted for Kerry. In two states (Michigan and Oregon), Kerry won more total votes than Bush – but the ban still passed by 59% and 57% (respectively) in those states.

After enduring all of the vitriolic bile and falsehoods spewed by the left during this campaign, from the supercilious pomposity of the Michael Moore and George Soros contingents to the deliberate lies of our national media, one can be forgiven for deriving a certain satisfaction from watching their ineffectual yet still arrogant rage self-destruct into incoherence. That the hatred has only intensified after the election is a measure of the depth of contempt felt by elitist democrats for average Americans.

But something more sinister underlies the left's deeply held secular bigotry against religious Americans, who are now being portrayed by the left as something less than human, a strange species not even entitled to the ordinary respect accorded by one civilized human being to another. We have seen such religious bigotry and venomous hatred translated into action before, in the history of mankind. Such bigots ascended to power in Germany in 1933, and the result had names like Auschwitz and Dachau. We see religious hatred in the Middle East today, in the murder of Jewish civilians for no other reason than their religion; using techniques refined by Nobel Peace Prize winner General Arafat who, even The New Yorker admits, "never left terror behind". Arafat's passing last week was mourned by leftists as though he was a great statesman – once again showing they are incapable of recognizing evil when it stares them in the face. Leftists are apoplectic over the alleged "intolerance" and "ignorance" of the traditional values of the so-called "religious right"; but look at almost any newspaper – from the editorials written by leading lights on the left to letters from rank-and-file Democrats – you will find virtually all of the intolerance, ignorance, and hate coming from the left.

John Kerry, to his credit, called for national unity following the election; but the repellant rhetoric from his own party risks unleashing a primal hatred among its more lunatic fringe that no one will be able to control. Solons on the left would do well to reflect with great care upon the conflagration they risk igniting. At the very least, if democrats keep up the hate, they will only succeed in turning their party from a minority into an irrelevancy.

LIBEL SUIT: The New York Post reports that John Kerry is contemplating a lawsuit for libel against John O'Neill, author of Unfit for Command and member of the Swift Boat Veterans for Truth. President Bush would have a far better case for a libel suit against Dan Rather and CBS News for broadcasting that attack on Bush's National Guard service based on documents that Rather knew, or had good reason to know, could not be authenticated – reportedly, Rather was warned by CBS's own experts. "Actual malice" was defined by the U.S. Supreme Court in New York Times Co. v. Sullivan (1964): for a public official to be awarded damages for a defamatory falsehood, he must prove "that the statement was made with knowledge of its falsity or with reckless disregard of whether it was true or false." And "where a media defendant is involved, a statement on matters of public concern must be provable as false before liability can be assessed" – Milkovich v. Lorain Journal (1990). According to ABC News, "Two of the document experts hired by CBS News say the network ignored concerns they raised prior to the broadcast…". The Washington Post found a third CBS expert who said essentially the same thing. Certainly sounds like "reckless disregard", at the very least.

Or is our public discourse now so degraded that our elite media can say, literally, anything, and get away with it?

"BEYOND STUPIDITY": So says an American Legion spokesman about the ACLU's lawsuit that forced the Pentagon to end military sponsorship of Boy Scout troops, because the Scouts believe in God. Maybe stupid, but on a par with the ACLU's agenda to destroy the traditional institutions of this country. As Christmas approaches, they will renew their assault on the symbols of that holiday as well. Human Rights Watch demands that the Marine who shot the terrorist in Fallujah be indicted for a war crime, even though they admit the shooting may have been justified. Following hearings in Congress, there was speculation that money stolen by Saddam from the U.N.'s corrupt oil-for-food program was used, and is still being used, to fund terrorism; and some of our European "friends" violated sanctions to sell weapons to Saddam that insurgents may still be using to kill American soldiers. The ACLU, Human Rights Watch, the United Nations, parts of Europe…to which we can add much of our own media, and democrats who don't care what they tear down in their obsession to retake power – Islamic terrorists are not the only ones trying to tear down this country as it has existed for over 200 years.

On November 2, a majority of Americans stood up and said they were mad as hell and they're not going to take it any more. Get ready to get a whole lot madder – the war has barely begun. The lies and filth that we saw from the left in this past election was just a warm-up, and they will do anything to triumph.
