Our Mission

Big government is not simply the size of the budget, or the number of federal programs; it is the role the federal government plays in our daily lives.

We at the Lincoln Heritage Institute will not sit idly by and allow bloated bureaucracies, budensome tax policies, a failing public education system, and out of control regulatory system, and a growing disregard for the rule of law to become an accepted way of life.

We have as our purpose, through public education, the revitalization and preservation of our traditional political, social, commercial, and legal environment in which the only limits to achievement are individual ability and effort.

Watch Out!

by C. Grady Drago, Chairman of the Lincoln Heritage Institute.

Editor’s Note: This article was originally written in 2004 and appeared in the September issue of the American Gazette. Now that the Democrats finally have temporarily regained control of Congress (their approval rating is the lowest in history at 16%) they feel they are invincible and are showing their true colors. Their legislative activity has been a flurry of phony investigations with only a minimum wage increase to show for their intellectual legislative efforts. They have, however, begun campaigns to control every aspect of the public and political environment by attempting to silence anyone or anything that is informing the American public as to what is really going on. This includes attempts to regulate the internet, silence popular talk radio and TV, and weaken grass roots activities, to mention a few censorship activities.  They are beginning to look more and more like members of the former USSR Communist party, or perhaps foreign dictators. Because of these activities and the concern of the American people who are beginning to understand just what is going on, it seemed like a good time to rerun this article.

The liberals in and out of government are no longer even trying to disguise their attempts to silence opposition to their views. Not since the Sedition Act of June 1798 (and its companion statute allowing deportation of problem aliens) has one political party and ideology tried harder to silence dissent and free speech than has the Democrat party.

Political correctness is perhaps the most subtle and insidious attempt to silence any open debate or criticism of liberal viewpoints. While it is not a federal crime, yet, it certainly carries penalties to speak ill of any policy or group the liberals are promoting.

“Nazi” (which was a Socialist movement – the National Socialist German Workers Party), “Racist”, “Bigot”, are just some of the tags thrown at people in an attempt to silence and discredit out-of-hand, opposing opinions. As an example, by expressing your opinion that the liberal Hollywood crowd’s views were wrong, weird, or anti-American, you open yourself to being called a Nazi. To them, freedom of speech is a one-way street – they can present the opinion that you are wrong, but you cannot express the opinion that their opinions are wrong without facing an irrational hysterical onslaught that you are trying to silence free speech.

They use the tactics they profess to hate as a weapon to silence those that disagree with them. Perhaps the most aggressive and devastating activities take place on college campuses where young minds can be intimidated into silence or threatened with a poor grade by not buying into the agenda of liberal professors. This effort to silence opposition is evidence of a corrupt, dishonest, weakened, and dying movement. The interesting anomaly is that a majority of Americans oppose their views.

The tags that are attached to those disagreeing with liberals have had a divisive impact on this nation while liberals accuse the opposition of being divisive. While we have not seen the arrests, prosecutions, court cases and imprisonments that occurred under the “Alien and Sedition Acts” for simply disagreeing with ‘federalists’, it could be just a matter of time. Under the ‘federalist’s’ rule, they attempted to silence those who were simply opposed to the centralization of all power in the newly created national government.  Today, it appears that if the liberals have their way (always with the enablement and promotion of a liberal media) it could be just around the corner.

The liberal’s hate has boiled up to a fever pitch because their plans to continue the propagation of liberal policies that weakened national defense, weakened our ability to gather and interpret intelligence, and threatened the loss of our sovereignty, were short-circuited when even the most brazen illegal campaign tactics (including an attempt to have votes counted twice in friendly counties in Florida; massive illegal registrations in California and Southern Florida; and attempts to disenfranchise military absentee ballots) failed to garner the Presidency for their chosen charge, Al Gore.

Out-of-control liberal activist judges, liberals in and out of Congress, and power hungry regulatory agencies have been trying to find legal paths to silence your ability to dissent or to even discuss your opinion if they oppose what you think.

  • The Supreme Court has decided to crush the ability of a candidate for office to respond to lies and negative unproven charges in the media by prohibiting their ability to purchase advertising to correct the record or to even challenge allegations attributed to an ‘unknown source’.
  • The IRS is looking at drastically changing regulations and limiting the ability of non-profit public policy/public education corporations to present studies or papers that show problems with a proposed pending regulation or legislation.

Is the next step to attempt to end political debate on the Internet? It looks that way.

Legislation to tax access to the Internet is being proposed. Instead of continuing, by extending the long-standing prohibition against taxing the Internet, liberals in Congress are proposing to follow the road they began by allowing states to tax the Internet.

So watch out! Don’t offer an opinion and don’t complain unless you know what the liberals want. Big Brother is indeed watching, and he is the media and entertainment industry, Non-Government Organizations, and liberals in government. What is even more frightening is the fact that the media, the beneficiary of free speech and the first to claim its protection, is promoting silencing those apposed to the liberal dogma. After all, only they are protected by the First Amendment – right?

I welcome liberals to present “facts,” not rhetorical sophistry, to prove me wrong or to at least soothe my fears for my fellow Americans and our future.
