Our Mission

Big government is not simply the size of the budget, or the number of federal programs; it is the role the federal government plays in our daily lives.

We at the Lincoln Heritage Institute will not sit idly by and allow bloated bureaucracies, budensome tax policies, a failing public education system, and out of control regulatory system, and a growing disregard for the rule of law to become an accepted way of life.

We have as our purpose, through public education, the revitalization and preservation of our traditional political, social, commercial, and legal environment in which the only limits to achievement are individual ability and effort.

A Global Warming Blitzkrieg

by C. Grady Drago, Chairman of the Lincoln Heritage Institute

In the tradition of the environmental activists and their supportive and nurturing friends on the left, I am going to partake of one of their favorite public relations tactics of kamikaze blitzkrieging information. The difference is I am not going to provide phony scientific jargon or fictitious studies as evidence of the truth of the following list of facts. I know the factuality of my comments, and will not insult you with science fiction-style data so prevalent on the left.

This tactic is usually designed to overwhelm and intimidate the reader to ensure that the activists have a head start on any public relations by delaying any correction of the phony scientific information they espouse. I am, however, inviting anyone to factually counter anything on the following list. Any such responsible counter will be published on our website.

You will note that, unlike the demands of liberal environmental organizations, nothing on the list requires the implementation of a new government program; there is not an attempt to garner any political power for an NGO; there is nothing that increases the power of the U.N.; there is nothing that requires the creation of a new product; an increase in the power of the federal government is not necessary; and certainly there is nothing that requires curtailment of individual rights, the control of human action, thoughts, or finances; and the list goes on.

  • Heating and cooling cycles of the earth’s atmosphere have been going on since the planet was created and long before human beings were on the planet.
  • A mini-ice age began about 1300 and ended about 500 years later, around 1800. Average temperatures, as you would expect, have risen since then but only by about .5 degrees Celsius. Man was using very little hydrocarbons in the 1800’s.
  • The frost line in Florida has been steadily moving South over the past several years, causing many farming operations to have to move to Central or South America.
  • The Earth has often been hotter than it is now.
  • Only a miniscule portion of greenhouse gases are manmade.
  • Most of Antarctica is getting colder.
  • The media has only recently abandoned the “global cooling” scare that they said would create a new ice age, threatening the East Coast of the U.S.
  • There is no scientific consensus on global warming.
  • Climate is always changing with or without mankind.
  • Many big businesses lobby for and adopt global warming policies that will increase their profits – and our costs. Ethanol is one example, which incidentally uses more energy to create than it provides.
  • The Medieval period was significantly warmer than temps today and was a golden age for agriculture, innovation, and lifespan.
  • Since its creation, earth has been going through climate changes, experiencing several ice ages and global warming periods – most without mankind even being on the planet.
  • NASA’s satellite and NOAA’s oceanographic and surface measuring devices indicate that there has been no measurable increase in temperatures for the past 50 years. The U.N.’s computer models have been consistently wrong in temperature predictions. Before 1990, they predicted temperatures would rise by .8 degrees Celsius [about 2 degrees Fahrenheit] per decade. By 1990, they lowered that estimate to about .3 degrees Celsius, and in 1995 they again lowered their predictions to .2 degrees Celsius increases per decade. (All of them were wrong.) In fact, there is a body of evidence that indicates that over the past 20 years there has actually been a slight cooling.
  • According to scientists at MIT and NASA, water vapor – not carbon dioxide – is a greater regulator of global temperatures than carbon dioxide. In fact, there is a body of evidence that shows that not only is carbon dioxide absolutely crucial to the health and growth of vegetation through photosynthesis, but actually contributes to filtering the sun’s rays (see the records of the U.S. Historical Climatology Network, which go back to 1890).
  • 15,000 of the world’s top climatologists, geologists, meteorologists, physicists, and others have signed a petition denouncing the Kyoto Treaty.
  • Dr. Fred Singer stated in his comments opposing a National Academy of Science (NAS) study that “…none of the many proxy measurements (tree rings, ice cores, etc) shows any warming trend after 1940.” He states further that “…the available evidence directly contradicts the idea that humans have made and are making substantial contributions to temperature changes.”
  • In an article written by Alan Caruba, a respected science and business writer, he pointed out that in previous eras the concentration of carbon dioxide was five times higher than today without human existence. For over 100 million years it sustained the dinosaurs and produced lush vegetation.
  • Dr. Richard S. Lindzen states that the summary of the NAS report on climate change as reported by CNN’s Michelle Mitchell, claiming that the NAS panel unanimously agreed “…that global warming is real, is getting worse, and is due to man,” is absolutely wrong.
  • Record cold temperatures over the past few years have killed thousands in Siberia, northern India, Inner Mongolia, Afghanistan, Kazakhstan, Norway, Sweden, Finland and elsewhere.
  • Floridians have complained bitterly that they could not remember a winter as cold as the past few. Many orange groves in north central Florida no longer produce fruit and the frost line is moving further south, as is the case in many other areas in the Northern Hemisphere.
  • In the U.S., we have been recording some of the lowest average winter temperatures since the last mini-ice age. In the rush to politicize human Global Warming, there have been charges that the current administration has attempted to prevent the development of global warming data, when in fact the Bush Administration has been the single largest financial supporter of global warming research.
  • Currently, we are simply experiencing what the planet has gone through since it was established – natural atmospheric swings. Increases in finances in an attempt to abate global warming, and increases in the size and power of the federal government are not going to have any impact on the earth’s atmosphere and is not needed. It would be a much bigger waste of resources than the Great Society programs.

The entire “human caused global warming scam” has been scientifically discredited long ago. However, those with a vested interest, and particularly those wishing to increase their personal wealth and political power, have been fighting like a dying insect to keep the issue viable and alive.

The Al Gores of this world are simply pitiful examples of has-beens appealing to a known sympathetic audience that have the ability to have a significant PR impact, thereby aiding in their attempt to recapture lost glories. The Kyoto treaty and its implementing provisions are not working and are simply another failed liberal attempt to increase the power of the U.N., increase the size and control of the federal government, and negatively impact the U.S. economy. The problem is, if they have any success it will be at the expense of the American society, and particularly individuals.

Liberals and socialists love control; remember, communism is a great one-party system.
